What is a pelvic ultrasound?

An ultrasound uses high frequency ultrasound waves to help visualise the organs in the pelvis. It is also the best way to asses the unborn fetus if a woman is pregnant. It is completely safe and is an extremely effective way to assess the pelvic organs or pregnancy.

What should I expect when I have a pelvic ultrasound?

There are two ways to perform an ultrasound. A transabdominal ultrasound involves looking at the pelvis by placing a transducer on the abdomen. The patient needs a full bladder so if you need a transabdominal ultrasound you should drink 11/2 litres of water 90 minutes before your appointment. A transvaginal ultrasound involves placing a small transducer in the vagina. It is similar to having an internal examination, but should not be uncomfortable. A transvaginal ultrasound needs an empty bladder.

Which scan should I have?

A vaginal ultrasound is preferred as it gives much better images of the ovaries, womb and other pelvic structures. However, if you particularly wish a transabdominal ultrasound, please come with a full bladder, let a member of staff know and the advantages and disadvantages can be discussed.

Can I have a transvaginal ultrasound if I'm having a period?

There is no reason why you can not have a transvaginal ultrasound if you are having a period. If you wish to change your appointment, this can be arranged.

Which scans do you offer in early pregnancy?

An early scan is available from as little as 7 weeks after your last menstrual period. This will tell you if the pregnancy is viable, whether it is a single pregnancy or twins, and date the pregnancy. It is important to wait this long as the fetal heart can not be seen until after 7 weeks. This can be reassuring for mothers concerned about their pregnancy. Should there be any problems (for example if you have a silent miscarriage), your consultant can counsel you and offer any necessary treatment.
GynaeHealthcare does not provide a nuchal screening test for Down's syndrome and other abnormalities. These need to be performed at around 12 weeks gestation and can be obtained either on the National Health Service or if you prefer, your consultant / his secretary will be able to give you a contact for a local private provider.

Who will perform my scan?

Generally all ultrasound scans are performed by Mr Phillips.
